JOB SUMMARY:

With direction of the Tribal Support Coordinator, the Garden Assistant will oversee the greenhouse, production of vegetable seedling transplants, and perform garden planting and garden maintenance duties in the Elk Valley Rancheria Garden.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Plant and care for greenhouse seedling transplants
• Implement the greenhouse production plan according to the seeding schedule
• Coordinate staff and volunteers to assist with seeding
• Monitor seedling germination
• Perform greenhouse plant maintenance as directed including watering, weeding, thinning, fertilizing and pest control
• Help monitor greenhouse temperatures & growing conditions
• Ensure greenhouse is neat and well organized
• Monitor greenhouse supplies inventory and order as needed
• Plant and provide garden maintenance under the direction of the Tribal Support Coordinator
• Plant seedlings and transplants as directed by Tribal Support Coordinator, according to the planting schedule in relation to succession planting to assure continued growing opportunities
• Perform garden maintenance including watering, weeding, thinning, mulching, fertilizing and pest control
• Coordinate garden maintenance duties with volunteers and summer staff
• Assist with garden bed repair, maintenance, and production as needed
• Oversee distribution of produce available for Tribal elders and Tribal members
• Collect data and maintain program records
• Maintain accurate records of all greenhouse production
• Maintain accurate records of planting dates & planting maps

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job requires no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
College degree in relevant field (horticulture, education, nutrition, community development social work etc.) preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must have the ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. This includes the ability to write communicative correspondence and to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees of the organization.

MATH SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Visually analyze various capacities of proportions, distances, and frequencies.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

To perform this job, successfully, an individual should have knowledge in basic computer skills; Outlook e-mail, internet, printing, faxing and copying.

No Certificates, Licenses or Registrations necessary for this position.

The following trainings will be offered post-employment and are required within the training schedule timeframe: sexual harassment prevention, hand and power tool, ladder safety, PPE, driving safety, safety orientation, back safety, hazard communication, office safety and office ergonomics.
